I have always been a fan of beautiful or unusual postage stamps. Add flowers and couture fashion into the mix and you will find me rushing out to buy stamps to use as postage as well putting aside a whole sheet of stamps to frame as art.
In this instance, I'm talking about the new Oscar de la Renta images recently issued as Forever® stamps. Derry Noyes served as art director and designer of the stamp sheet. Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin took the de la Renta portrait photo.
One of my sisters sweetly sent me a sheet of these stamps as a birthday gift. She must have remembered the time I strong armed her out of a sheet of Chinese New Year stamps that were daffodil images!
Now that I've seen these gorgeous stamps in person I went looking for a little more info about them. I read about the "first day of issue" event for the stamps on Vogue magazine's website. Special stamps usually get special attention on their initial sale day, but these stamps got the red carpet treatment.
The ceremony was emceed by none other than Anderson Cooper. Hillary Clinton (below, Vogue photo), along with former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and Anna Wintour, Artistic Director of Condé Nast and Editor in Chief of Vogue, all spoke at the event.
According to the article, Clinton spoke about her family's personal relationship with de la Renta and his family. She also pointed out that he had moved to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic as an immigrant, saying “aren‘t we proud and grateful that he was.“ Clinton concluded her speech by saying, “And let there be many, many, more immigrants with the love of America that Oscar de la Renta exemplified every single day.”
A message worth repeating again and again these days — even if it means we can't escape from politics and the news no matter where we look.
