Tony Avent, the mastermind behind Plant Delights Nursery, sent out this email (below) on Tuesday afternoon. It's a brilliant stroke of marketing and an amusing poke at current politics. It definitely brightened my day. And living in Wisconsin I clicked through to see if there were any cold climate plants I might need to add to my garden to take my mind off politics. You can click HERE to get to the rest of the ad and the plant listings.
I looked at the plant list for Zone 3b for Edmonton, Alberta. That is usually colder than where I live in Wisconsin but whenever we get wicked winter weather it is often known as an Alberta Clipper. Turns out I already grow lots of the plants on the list but I fell in love with a couple of things that instantly went onto my must-have list.
Look at the foliage on this Helleborus niger 'Tabby.' A pewter-leafed Hellebore is an uncommon creature in my neighborhood as they usually are only hardy to Zone 7 or thereabouts. This is a foliage plant to die for.
And then there's this hardy Kentucky Ladyslipper Orchid (Cypripedium kentuckiense). Since I've managed to keep a Ladyslipper alive and blooming in the garden I'm willing to give it another go and give this beauty a try. Thanks Tony and PDN for getting my mind off politics and back to gardening where it belongs.
