On our recent visit to Anderson Gardens in Rockford, we happened to glance upward as we strolled beneath this weeping willow tree.
If we hadn't done so, we never would have realized that the tree had been topped — by accident or design.
But unless you stood under it and looked upwards, it was impossible to tell.
Either way, that pruning was keeping the willow in scale with the garden and its setting.
It reminded us of the dramatic willow tree we saw in Jeannette Golden's garden on last month's WHPS tour.
Her tree is almost hollow but is still growing and adds a note of drama to the landscape.
