Everyone knows about Swiss Army knives. But less familiar are other items related to that nation's army. Among the hot collectibles of the moment are Swiss Army blankets. So heavy and wooly they will keep you warm if you have to spend a night outdoors in the Alps or inside in Wisconsin in the winter. Each greyish/brown blanket is marked with a unique issue number and the signature white cross on a red stripe. Made — obviously — in Switzerland.
If you live in Madison you probably discovered these a few years ago the way we did. We stumbled across them at one of our favorite shops, Unearthed, located at the time on Old University Ave. Today Unearthed is selling them on Etsy for about $125.00 We don't remember for sure, but think that's probably what we paid. On the other hand, the Sundance catalog site is offereing them for about $300.00!
The best news from our point of view is that Unearthed again has a bricks-and-mortar shop in Madison at 1041 S. Park St. (phone 608-445-8461). And for the record, Switzerland is a neutral nation and does not take part in armed conflicts in other countries though they do participate in peace-keeping missions.
